Hi guys,
I've been having a think about goal setting and I've decided it would be good to try at fencing. The idea is, you set yourself a goal to do with your fencing that is measurable, attainable and challenging and try to achieve it in a time frame you decide. The point is to improve your fencing by having something to work towards.
Examples of bad goals:
"I will try to get better at fencing." - not measurable.
"I will try to become world champion." - not attainable.
"I will try to score one point before the end of term." - not challenging.
Examples of good goals:
"I want to in ten fights by the end of term."
"I will enter an open and try to win one point in every pool fight."
"I will try to win my first DE in an open."
"I will try to improve my on guard position enough so that Andrew says it's perfect before the end of term."
"Tonight at training I will try to score one hit using a beat attack, a ballestra-lunge and a fleche."
"I will try to score three hits on the arm and three on the foot in every epee match I fence tonight."
If you achieve your goal you go on to set yourself a more challenging one.
The way I want to run this is that you talk to me about your goal and we decide what it will be together. That way I can make sure it's measurable, attainable and challenging. If I know what it is I can also help you try and achieve it. You won't have to talk to anyone else about your goal unless you want to and I won't talk about your goal to anyone else either.
I'd really like everyone to get involved in this as I think it would be really beneficial.
I'll mention this again at the next few training sessions and whenever I see people outside training as well and you can start coming to talk to me about your goals.
I'll also see what I can do about some small prizes at the end of term for those of you that achieve your goals. What more incentive do you need?! So start having a think about what you might like to work towards.
Andrew
