1.Message from the Vice-President
Greetings, LIUF competitors!

I hope you have all recovered from the weekend and have returned home with many fond memories of LIUF 12.  On behalf of UCL Fencing Club, I would just like to thank you all for coming and making it such a success.  Certainly, the organisers had an awesome (if exhausting) time and a huge part of that is down to the tremendous attitude shown by all of you guys.  It is this attitude that makes LIUF (and all of those tournaments hosted by our friends over in Europe) so special.  Where else would competitors have built themselves a fort to sleep in, or tried to post themselves to Barry Paul as thanks for lending us equipment?  I hope you will all agree that the friendly, laid-back atmosphere found at the LIUF tournament offers much more than your bog-standard national tournament, and provides an enjoyable environment as well as a high standard of fencing.

Without going on for too long, I would like particularly to mention a few people without whom this tournament could not have gone ahead.  First off, our President, James O'Dwyer (because he would never mention himself).  James has done a brilliant job of presiding over the preparations for LIUF this year, and it is no small part due to him that everything went off so well.

Secondly, our Alumni Officer and Honorary President, Jules Mazowiecki.  Having run the tournament for several years previously, his advice and input were invaluable, as were his direct contributions on the day and in the lead-up to the event.

A large tournament like LIUF cannot work without a large team of people to keep it going smoothly, and I want to express my gratitude to all of those who gave up their time to make the tournament the best it could possibly be.  Whether that be setting up and taking down the pistes, carrying things to the hall, making the sandwiches, running errands, manning the DT or anything else, there was great performance and dedication by all, and for that I thank you.  Unfortunately you are too numerous to mention here, but you know who you are!

I would like to thank Susan Wesley for giving up her weekend to come referee the tournament.  This is the first year we have had an FIE-qualified referee in attendance and she was very kind to volunteer to do it for free.  If anyone feels like showing their thanks, she has asked for sponsorship on a charity bike ride.  It has already happened, but I believe you can still donate at http://www.justgiving.com/BCGMTB

Finally, one special mention to Andrew McLeod of Cardiff, whose tips on the use of the Enguarde system were of great assistance.

Thanks for coming, and we hope to see you next year!

Vice-President and Serjeant-at-Arms

2.Results
In case anyone forgot the results after the Karaoke on Sunday night, allow me to just quickly run through the final results of the weekend.

The John Klier Shield - This award is very special to UCL, as it commemorates the life of a very important member of our club.  John Klier was a lecturer in Jewish Studies at UCL and a sabreur with the club before he passed away last year.  The shield, awarded to the club with the best all-round performance, is a fitting memorial to a man who contributed so much over such a long time.

This year the shield was taken home by the deserving winners, ULU (University of London Union).  With spectacular performance across the board (most prominently Graham Miles, who won the silver in the foil), they have really outdone themselves this year.  We very much hope they will return next year so we can win the shield back from them. :)

3.The Oxfam Open
Now that I've got your attention, I'd like to bring to your attention a few other upcoming events that you might be interested in.

The most imminent one is the Oxfam Open.  Organised by the Star Sword Club in Cardiff, and in association with Cardiff University, it is unique among British Opens in that all profits and t-shirt sales will go to charity.  There has already been almost £1,500 raised for Oxfam, and with your help even more can be raised.  Do your bit for world poverty and come poke swords into people on the 21st and 22nd of June!  It is BFA-registered so national ranking points will be up for grabs (make sure your BFA cards are up to date!)

3.Student Fencing in Europe
Ever fancied nipping off to Europe to fence, drink and socialise with friendly Europeans?  Well, did you know that there are a bunch of tournaments around Europe which share LIUF's sociable student scene?  UCL Fencing club has been jetting off to Europe for more than a decade, when annual friendly competitions were set up between an British and a German University (one being LIUF, the other the JOGU Cup in Mainz).  Now, 12 years later, UCL fencers this year engaged in no less than five student-run competitions in Europe, and it is so important to our club that our constitution defines it as one of our core activities.  If you enjoyed LIUF then you should certainly consider coming along to one or two of the events organised by our friends on the continent:
  1. Touche à Bâle, Basel CH
  2. JOGU Cup, Mainz DE
  3. CUIF (Copenhagen Universities International Fencing), Copenhagen DK
  4. X-Challenge, Paris FR
It is UCL's goal to strengthen the links between these tournaments, and give student fencing an identity in Europe.  We hope that many of you will come along to some of the tournaments above, and help us craft a truly international community of student fencers.

5.Staying in Touch via Facebook
Finally, because we want you all to come back next year, it's very important that we are able to contact you in the future.  The first way you can do that is by making sure that we always have the most recent email address for your club, but you can also feel free to get in touch via facebook!

We have a facebook group: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2207231043
and a facebook fan page:    http://tinyurl.com/6djhl8

Join either of these if you want to stay in touch, and feel free to get in contact with any of the committee members directly.
